Madison high school student’s death confirmed to be caused by COVID-19

A junior at Madison East High School died of COVID-19.

The death of Madison East High School junior Isai Morocho on Nov. 25 was confirmed to be caused by COVID-19, a spokesperson for Public Health Madison and Dane County said Monday.

Morocho, 16, is the youngest person reported to have died from the coronavirus in Wisconsin.

According to a state dashboard, no other Wisconsin residents under age 20 have died from the virus. Fifteen people ages 20-29 have died from COVID in Wisconsin.

School administrators previously reported Morocho had died after a COVID-related illness, but COVID had not been determined as the cause of death.

Sarah Mattes, spokesperson for Public Health Madison and Dane County, said the death “underscores just how important it is for all of us to take precautions to protect ourselves and our loved ones from this virus.”

Madison East Principal Brendan Kearney, in a previous email to the student body, called Morocho a “caring friend and family member with a ready smile and great sense of humor.”

A GoFundMe page set up for the family is still open.
